If the reaction from Bike Friday Owners is any indication, our latest design will be a very big hit for 2013.
We began building pre-ordered Silks for Bike Friday Owners this month, and are officially introducing the newest Bike Friday and making it available to the general public immediately.
Bike Friday engineer Rob English and Co-Founder Alan Scholz worked together for a solution to bring the super popular Gates Carbon Belt Drive Technology to our 20-inch bikes to satisfy the demand of our customers.
The new frame design [IN PHOTO, LEFT] allows the Gates Carbon Belt Drive System to maintain its proper tension in and out of our tried and true fold that allows you to take advantage of the convenience of a high performance Bike Friday, and take it with you anywhere.
The Silk is made possible by a special Ratcheting Adjustable Dropout technology (RAD)(patent applied), [IN PHOTO, RIGHT] which allows for incremental chain stay length without the possibility of slipping out of adjustment.
It is completely modular so it can adapt to any type of drivetrain, although our initial offering is focused on Gates Carbon Belt Drive.
The belt drive on the 20-inch wheels offers a much better gear range than it does on our 16-inch tikit.
Silk also takes all the new hub drives that have become available in the last few years along with any derailleur system and makes them available on a core style Pocket Bike Friday, whether it be touring, commuter, road or mountain.
In true Bike Friday tradition, consider us Your Personal Factory. Silk can be configured with the handlebars of your choice: Flat Bars, H-Bars or Drop Bars. And, with the gearing to fit your needs. It can be designed with 406 or 451 wheels, and in sizes ranging from 48 cm to 62 cm.
You can choose from three basic versions of Silk, with all available on 406 or 451 wheels:
